WE ARE SHEARER DESIGN

Made for the great outdoors

With 20 years in landscape design and construction, we create solution-driven outdoor spaces for people who want to spend more time with one another. People reckon we’re pretty good at it, too.

Ben’s first project in the early 1990’s at the tender age of 10 was a treehouse on Auckland’s leafy North Shore. Declared a roaring success by the neighbourhood’s children (his parents less impressed by the increased foot-fall to the property to view this new real estate), it was clear to see where his passion lay. A decade-long career in construction followed with varied project management roles spanning villa renovations, commercial builds and marine installations. An enduring love for the great outdoors, however, drew him to university where he qualified as a landscape designer.

Over the last decade, Ben and his team have been quietly designing, building and maintaining outdoor spaces across Auckland. His clients have tended to grow, highly organically, in clusters throughout Remuera, Northcote Point, Herne Bay, Westmere and Point Chevalier – the result of word-of-mouth recommendations that have meant formal marketing has never been a consideration. We’d be happy to connect you to any of them if you’d like a recommendation.

MEET YOUR TEAM

The team hear 'you're not what I expected,' a lot. When clients are asked to elaborate further, they use words like 'careful', 'trustworthy', 'precise' 'creative' and 'tidy'. And the phrase used most often is 'they take pride in the work they do'.
Ben
Ben

Principal designer, primary point of contact and home brewer, Ben leads a bright team of merry men. A Shore boy done good, Ben is the proud father of two little girls who he's raising with his wife as bilingual in French and English.

Tai
Tai

A highly talented and creative musician who can flit between instruments with ease, dark horse Tai is the most adaptable member of the team. With a broad range of skills he’s often called on to move fluidly between projects.

James
James

A true Southern Man, James, cutting a rugged figure as project lead, manages each build. Made in the image of the Speights icon, he's most at home bulldozing, precision laying timber and building decks that stand the test of time.

Ben M.
Ben M.

Green-thumbed force of nature Ben M. brims with enthusiasm and positivity. Taming unwieldy sections in a whirlwind of long limbs made limber by many a morning yoga session, you may have seen this sometime poster boy on a bus stop near you.

Harry
Harry

Yoga advocate and marathon runner, Harry takes a considered approach to outdoor maintenance. His eyes on the long-term health of your garden, he is well-known in many a suburb for his work on sustaining beautiful outdoor spaces (and as the face of a Kathmandu campaign).

Saxon

With over 1,600 friends on Facebook, Saxon's enthusiasm is contagious. One of life's great do-ers, he's efficient and always looking to find a better and faster way to work.

“Negotiations used to centre around screen time. Now it’s ‘one last round of marshmellows in the fire’, ‘one more swim’, and ‘ten more minutes on the trampoline.”
“There is nothing sweeter than coming home from work and sitting beneath our fruit trees, full to bursting, with a glass of pinot noir in hand, my feet bare, the grass between my toes and my family around me.”
“As I open the cedar gate to my fully enclosed front garden and step over the threshold, it’s the smell of jasmine that tells me I’m home. And with each step I take along the floating steps, each sliced from a boulder and laid amongst dark green mossy vegetation, the further away I am from everything that happened that day. ”
“I can breathe easier watching the kids play from the kitchen and the lounge now. Fully fenced, there are no hidden places, no immediate dangers lurking… A play heaven for them instead.”
