Following in the family's foot steps

The brief:
Transform an overgrown jungle of a dis-used outdoor space into a purposeful but low-maintenance communal area for a young family.

  • Jungle cleared, a series of striking inter-linked platforms drop down across the sloping bank.
  • Each platform has a purpose: the largest functions as a deck for barbecues and beers in the sun. Early morning coffees are best enjoyed with feet dangling from the side of the highest plane, and two little girls love swinging their legs in the breeze, breakfast bowls in hand. Sunbathers and shade hunters can move as the sun does and the family’s yogi has a variety of different locations to practice from.
  • Hard-wearing and smooth, high-quality vitex has been used to encourage barefoot prancing and skipping from plane to plane by young adventurers.
  • Lush green NZ natives bring contrast, complementing the angular step ways.
  • With a real eye for detail, supporting structures have been painted black so the pathways appear to float.
